The origin
A fruit fit for royalty
The Medjool date was once reserved exclusively for Moroccan royalty and their honored guests. Growing in the fertile oases of the Draa Valley and the Tafilalet region, this rare variety was so prized that commoners were forbidden from tasting it. Rich, caramel-sweet, and soft as honey — it was considered the greatest gift one could offer.
Morocco
Born in Boudnib
The Medjool palm was first cultivated by the Fellahs of Boudnib — patient farmers who mastered the art of growing this exceptional variety over centuries. The ideal climate of southeastern Morocco, with its scorching sun, dry air and cool nights, created conditions no other region could replicate.
The fruit developed its signature softness, deep sweetness, and golden-brown flesh here — and nowhere else in the world quite like it.
"The palm tree is to the people of North Africa what the grape vine is to the people of Europe."

1300s
Royal Morocco
The Medjool variety becomes a protected royal fruit in Morocco. Only the Sultan and his guests may taste it. The Fellahs of Boudnib tend to the palms with generations of expertise.
1920s
Near extinction
A devastating disease sweeps through Moroccan date palms. The Medjool variety nearly disappears. Only a handful of offshoots survive, carefully preserved and smuggled to safety.
1927
The American chapter
11 Medjool offshoots are brought from Morocco to the United States. Planted in Nevada and later California, they thrive in the Coachella Valley's desert climate.

What makes it special
Why Medjool is the king
Unlike other date varieties which are thin, dry, or overly sweet, the Medjool is in a class of its own. Its flesh is thick, moist, and tender — almost like a caramel wrapped in a velvet skin. The natural sugars are complex, giving it a flavor that evolves: first honey, then toffee, then a deep molasses warmth.
It is also remarkably nourishing — rich in fiber, potassium, magnesium, and natural antioxidants. Ancient warriors carried them for energy. Today, food lovers seek them for indulgence. At Jool, we treat each Medjool as what it truly is: a luxury ingredient worthy of the finest fillings.
